New Extranet provides Valuable
Real-time Information for Pig Farmers
The modern market place is highly competitive
and UK Farmers need to provide their customers with goods
that meet well defined market driven specifications.
 To
achieve this, Farmers need valuable statistical feedback from
Processors so that production methods can be fine tuned. This
is essential as a deviation from the specification results
in a potential loss of income for the Farmer. Although Processors
have always provided feedback to the Farmer it has usually
been by Post and presented as a computer listing, neither
of which is ideal for the Farmer.
 With
the increasing use of the Internet by the farming community,
Orchid's solution was to build Extranets that receive the
information electronically, direct from the Processors. As
soon as the information in received from the Processor, it
is available for the Farmer. The information is also presented
in a user-friendly, graphical form using real-time graphing
software. The data on the Extranet can also be ‘queried’
over several months or downloaded by the Farmer to analyse
on a spreadsheet if desired.
The Extranets are helping to build a community
of geographically dispersed farms by providing a forum for
sharing and obtaining information. Something Orchid have always
