Oil and Gas Industry

Orchid produces technical manuals, training material and maintenance systems that ensure your personnel are fully informed.

The Oil and Gas Industry’s unique legislative and safety requirements require highly specialised technical documentation in order to efficiently operate and maintain its installations.

Orchid’s experienced staff have been involved in the production and presentation of a wide variety of technical information for onshore and offshore installations for over twenty years, both in the UK, the Middle East and Africa. The wealth of process knowledge gained over this period is utilised by us to provide successful solutions to our client’s problems.

Technical Manuals

Orchid produces and delivers technical manuals specifically tailored to client requirements. With regard to the UK North Sea these manuals may be produced in order to comply with such legislation as:

  • SI 1995/738 The Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (Management and Administration) Regulations [MAR]
  • SI 1995/743 The Offshore Installations (Prevention of Fire and Explosion, and Emergency Response) Regulations [PFEER]
  • SI 1996/913 Offshore Installations and Wells (Design and Construction, etc) Regulations [DCR]

In other areas of the world such manuals may be produced in order to comply with relevant national legislation, company standards and practices, or to UK North Sea standards in order to establish a local standard.

Typically Orchid produce the following types of manual:

OPERATING PROCEDURES
Containing step by step instructions for operators to follow when operating plant. Instructions may be supported by a variety of additional data types, ie system descriptions, equipment lists, valve lists, valve position tables, PFDs/P&IDs/SLDs, cause & effect charts, setpoint listings, etc.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Containing instructions to be followed in the event of specific foreseeable emergency situations. Instructions may be supported by a variety of additional data types, ie personnel emergency duties and responsibilities, details of external support arrangements/facilities, instructions for operating emergency equipment/systems, etc.

TRAINING
Containing information targeted at a client identified level of user. Can vary widely in content and intent of use, from knowledge of basic skills up to complex plant familiarisation.

OPERATING AND TRAINING
Orchid have successfully produced combined Operating and Training Manuals for overseas clients. These manuals combined the plant operating information required by experienced operators with descriptive and theory of operation information aimed at less experienced or newly recruited operators.

MAINTENANCE
Containing step by step preventive and corrective maintenance routines supported by maintenance schedules and spare parts listings.

MANUAL DELIVERY METHODS
Orchid deliver manuals in traditional paper format, in a variety of sizes, and also in various electronic formats, from simple PDF format documents on a CD to self-loading or pre-installed Integrated Electronic Technical Manuals.

Wall charts and Visuals

Wall charts and visual aids are typically produced in response to legislative requirements, to support seminars or to provide a large scale representation of a complex plant for reference purposes. These can be produced in full colour up to A0 size and on a variety of materials. Typical examples are; Station Bills, Escape Route and Safety Equipment Plans, Process Overview Diagram covering both offshore and onshore installations.

Training

Orchid can provide high quality training programmes including:

  • Definition of training objectives
  • Development and structuring of courses and lesson plans
  • Development of student appraisals
  • Preparation of training manuals, course notes and visual aids
  • Provision of experienced and qualified trainers

Computer Based Training (CBT) has real benefits for the training of operational staff, particularly with offshore process system familiarisation. CBT can be developed to run on industry standard multimedia computers and this can therefore be used to train staff at their own pace both onshore and offshore and at any time of day.

With careful planning it is possible in a documentation project to utilise source material used to produce operating manuals to produce CBT. This can be supplemented with video, animations and sound clips. A background database can be employed to track trainee’s progress and even produce certificates.

Planned Maintenance Systems

Orchid can provide planned maintenance systems for both offshore and onshore installations, either as a paper-based system or as a computerised system. Typically such a system would include the following elements:

  • Equipment register
  • Spare parts inventory
  • Maintenance schedule
  • Preventive maintenance plan
  • Maintenance procedures/guides
  • Test routines
  • Check lists

With a computerised system it is possible to implement Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), which has distinct reliability and cost benefits over a set-period planned maintenance system.
