An African-based international oil company was seeking to adopt North Sea safety standards. This included a requirement for bespoke, online e-Learning modules and scored assessments to ensure competency. The Orchid team was happy to help!
What was needed?

The e-learning modules were to include all aspects of the Permit to Work system, involving day-to-day operations and theory-based practices. The objective was to improve safety by supporting the implementation of safe working practices and safety awareness across all working locations. This was supported by examining examples of actual incidents and reflecting on how a better application of the procedures could have helped mitigate their occurrence.
This approach aimed to provide an engaging experience suitable for employees of all levels.
What happened?
The first step was to review the existing Permit to Work system. We used our working knowledge of the North Sea safety standards to identify the improvements and additions needed. It was also important to understand the potential risks and hazards involved.
The Orchid team spent time talking with the client to determine their exact requirements and timescale. The project included:
- storyboarding,
- design (including graphics, animation and voiceover), and
- development.

Using example scenarios, we were able to demonstrate how selecting the correct response for a given work-based hazardous situation was able to improve the safety of the team.
To ensure users fully understood the training, a scored competency test was made available to each person after they viewed each module. The Orchid team set the mandatory assessment questions to ensure the competency level required. This enabled the company to retain demonstrable training records and maintain a level of understanding for each person who took the training.
The end result was the production of four comprehensive modules and an additional assessment module.
Project reflection
Speaking about the project, Keith Glanville, Director of Orchid said: ‘We have been actively involved in the Oil and Gas sector for over 25 years. Orchid has provided a wide range of operating manuals, operating procedures and training materials to the industry.
‘As technology continues to partner traditional printed documentation, it is really interesting to deliver a project that is very visual and animated. For this project, it definitely optimised how key information was conveyed.
‘It was a much more engaging approach than the traditional option of a ‘chalk and talk’ training session. This made for a better user experience and the results from the assessment usually showed a higher level of engagement and understanding.’
How could e-Learning help your organisation?
E-Learning is hugely flexible with training delivered within an office, or online to trainees dispersed over a wide range of locations. It provides easy access to online materials (no printing costs) and can be used at a time to suit each employee’s role. Discover the potential.
