A scenario-based e-Learning project designed to train offshore safety trainers in risk awareness and communication.
Orchid worked in collaboration with a specialist Safety and Risk Assessment consultancy to develop a Process Safety e-Learning project for BP. The system was designed to support BP’s established chalk-and-talk, classroom-based training approach by training the trainers themselves.
Rather than replacing classroom delivery, the e-Learning provided a structured, visual and consistent way to ensure trainers fully understood process safety concepts, risk escalation and how to effectively communicate these ideas to offshore personnel.
Requirements
The client required a training solution that would:
- Support a train-the-trainer delivery model rather than direct operator training.
- Be suitable for use in a classroom environment, facilitated by an instructor.
- Clearly explain process safety and risk escalation concepts.
- Use realistic offshore North Sea scenarios relevant to day-to-day operations.
- Encourage discussion, reflection and questioning rather than passive learning.
- Conclude with a Q&A and assessment session to reinforce understanding.
The system needed to be engaging, memorable and easy for trainers to integrate into their existing classroom sessions.
Challenges
A key challenge was translating abstract safety and risk concepts into something that was easy to understand, explain and remember. The training needed to resonate with trainers delivering sessions to offshore staff with varied roles and experience levels.
Another challenge was ensuring the content supported facilitated discussion, rather than feeling like a self-paced e-Learning module, while still benefiting from the consistency and clarity of a digital platform.
The Solution
Orchid developed a standalone e-Learning platform built around six scenario-based modules, each reflecting realistic offshore situations. These ranged from high-risk operational events, such as a helicopter approaching an oil platform with a developing fault, through to lower-level but cumulative risks, such as food hygiene failures leading to widespread food poisoning.
To explain risk escalation in a clear and memorable way, the training used a Jenga tower analogy, visually demonstrating how removing small controls or safeguards can eventually lead to system collapse. This metaphor became a central teaching aid for trainers, helping them communicate complex safety principles in an accessible way.
The e-Learning incorporated:
- Animated scenarios.
- Voiceover narration.
- Visual risk metaphors.
- Structured discussion points.
- A final Q&A session to confirm understanding
The result was a flexible training tool that enhanced BP’s existing classroom delivery while ensuring consistent messaging and a shared understanding of process safety principles across trainers.
