A series of consistent, high-quality 3D technical illustrations supporting guidance, training and safety within the fishing industry.
Orchid was commissioned by Seafish, the UK’s leading seafood authority, to produce a comprehensive suite of full-colour 3D technical illustrations. The illustrations were required to clearly communicate fishing equipment, techniques and methods for use in industry guidance, training and informational materials.
In total, the project comprised 90 bespoke illustrations, each forming part of a coordinated visual series.
Project Requirements
The primary requirements for the project were to:
- Produce clear, accurate and easy-to-interpret technical illustrations.
- Represent complex fishing equipment and methods visually.
- Maintain absolute consistency across a large number of illustrations.
- Deliver artwork suitable for both print and digital use.
- Support training, safety guidance and industry best practice.
The illustrations needed to be suitable for use by fishermen and other industry professionals, many of whom rely on visual clarity rather than dense written instruction.
Key Challenges
The main challenges of the project included:
- Ensuring visual and technical consistency across all 90 illustrations.
- Accurately representing complex mechanical equipment and processes.
- Producing illustrations that were both technically precise and visually accessible.
- Designing artwork flexible enough for multiple applications, including print, training and promotional use.
The Solution
To ensure consistency and quality, Orchid dedicated a senior technical illustrator to the project. With over 20 years’ commercial design experience and a strong technical documentation background, this approach allowed for:
- A consistent, agreed visual style across the entire illustration set.
- Close collaboration with the client throughout the project.
- Efficient handling of technical detail without loss of clarity.
Each illustration was produced in full colour and designed as part of a cohesive series. The artwork was created to be scalable and adaptable, allowing it to be used across a range of media and formats.
Outcome and Use
The completed illustrations were supplied as a coordinated A4 colour series and are used to:
- Provide guidance and training on correct equipment usage.
- Support safety awareness across different fishing activities.
- Illustrate specific processes such as trawling and other techniques.
In addition, the illustrations are used within:
- Brochures and printed publications.
- Seminar and presentation materials.
- Exhibition displays.
The project delivered a comprehensive and reusable visual asset library for Seafish, supporting both education and promotion within the fishing industry.
